What You Will Learn

p>In a single school year, 1.2 million African-American students faced at least one day of suspension from our nation’s public schools. Research revealed that African-American students were suspended at more than three times the rate of Caucasian students.

In this 90-minute webinar, William Noel, Ed.D. will explore one possible explanation: that there are seemingly two types of student discipline at work in our schools. First, Criminalized Discipline, which uses punitive-based measures like suspension, expulsion or referral to law enforcement and second, Medicalized Discipline, which uses solution-based measures like medical attention and/or psychological intervention. Discipline data suppor the notion that violations by some students are viewed as conditions that warrant Criminalized Discipline; whereas code violations by other students are viewed as conditions that warrant Medicalized Discipline. Join this webinar to take a serious look at the role implicit bias, a lack of equity and a lack of cultural competence play on the actions and decisions of school staff.

Attendees will learn why equity is more important than equality -- equality promises everyone gets the same things but equity promises to give every student what he or she needs to succeed. Additionally, attendees will explore how implicit biases may have an impact on how educators treat students from poverty, minority students, students with disabilities and others. Join Dr. Noel on a cultural competency journey.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discover how implicit bias influences our actions
  • Discern the differences between equity and equality and why educators should stress equity over equality
  • Understand the importance of being “color brave”
  • Make the connection between mindset and emotions.

William Noel, Ph.D.
About the Presenter

Currently the Director of the Student Support & Disciplinary Review Office for Henrico County Public Schools near Richmond, Virginia, Dr. William Noel’s calling and passion for working with students is perfectly captured by this Mark Twain quote: “The two most important days of your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why.” That calling and passion is why Dr. Noel remains committed to being an influential role model for all students, but especially for those (sometimes) Hard-to-Reach students.

After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1991, Dr. Noel began his journey in education first as a substitute teacher, then as an alternative education teacher, social studies teacher, coach and assistant principal. Upon earning his Ed.D. degree in Educational Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Noel assumed his current position. When asked by a colleague if he was going to miss teaching when he moved into administration, he said, “I will always be a teacher - just no longer from a classroom.”
