What You Will Learn

Leaders sometimes hope that team-building events, open-door policies, frequent communication, additional technology and better food in the teacher lounge will create a positive school culture.  But school culture is based upon relationships.  When relationships (student-to-teacher, teacher-to-teacher, teacher-to-administrator, administrator-to-student) are in conflict, the climate and culture are negatively impacted.

In this 90-minute webinar, author and former national principal of the year candidate Larry Thompson, M.Ed. will illustrate how the culture in a school can become toxic when students are allowed to shirk responsibility for their actions and lay the blame on teachers. Teachers may then be at odds with administrators as the students are returned to the classroom with no apparent resolution. Teachers can feel unsupported and administrators can feel overwhelmed.

Larry will explain how the pyramid of responsibility is built on relationships between student, teacher and administrator. Viewers will learn why consistency is critical and how it can help not only with classroom management but also with calibrating office referrals. When students understand expectations and teachers help them accept responsibility when expectations are not followed, school culture can become healthy and robust!

Learning Objectives:

  • Discover the importance of relationships to a healthy school culture and how those relationships become damaged
  • Explore consequences vs relationships as they apply to classroom management
  • Gain an understanding of how to help students develop the “muscle” of self-control
  • Learn the difference between heuristic and algorithmic skills with regard to motivating students
  • Discover the Pyramid of Responsibility and how it affects school culture
  • Take away culture-building activities
