What You Will Learn

This 90-minute webinar will focus on helping teachers, counselors, principals and other educators understand ten common mental health conditions often mainstreamed in classrooms, activities, athletic teams and community organizations.

Previous events in this series have offered an overview of each issue; this webinar will underscore common challenges and provide practical tools and strategies that support this wide array of diagnostic conditions. The discussion will include strategies and insights for maximizing students’ assets and minimizing the disruptions of challenges faced by students.

The ten common challenges to be discussed include:

“Acting In Disorders”:

  • Bipolar Disorder
  • ADHD
  • Anxiety Disorder
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

“Acting Out Disorders”

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Reactive Attachment Disorder
  • Anger Disorders

Studies show that 1 in 5 students are diagnosable for a mental, emotional or behavioral health issue. In a single classroom, it is quite conceivable that a teacher could be dealing with 4 or 5 different disorders. This webinar will provide practical tools and strategies to help counselors, teachers and other professionals understand how to support and teach this high-potential portion of the student population while avoiding an unmanageable classroom environment. Behaviors that tend to be common to students who are “wired differently” and often frustrate or derail educators include:

  • Refusal to cooperate
  • Intentional disruption
  • Manipulation and splitting of staff
  • Controlling attention needs
  • Disruptive outbursts
  • Conflicts with peers
  • Over- and under-reacting to adults and peers

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • De-escalation Techniques that Work Across a Spectrum of Students
  • Effective Schools Research: 4 Basic Beliefs
  • Group Interventions
  • Designing Schoolwide Systems for Student Success
  • Strength Building
  • Teaching Emotional Intelligence
  • Handling Grief and Loss
  • 8 Essential Classroom Practices
