What You Will Learn

Studies show that up to 20 percent of all students are diagnosable for a mental, emotional or behavioral health issue.  In a single classroom, it is quite conceivable that a teacher might be dealing with 4 or 5 different disorders.  This webinar will help counselors, teachers and other professionals understand how to support and teach this high-potential portion of the student population while avoiding the development of an unmanageable classroom environment.

This webinar will focus on some of the most common “acting out” disorders in young people including:

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Reactive Attachment Disorder
  • Anger Disorders

This webinar will also provide insight into the 10 most common issues and practices educators and other professionals must understand in order to work effectively with students with both “acting in” ( anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder) and “acting out” disorders.  This webinar is appropriate for both new attendees and those who attended the original “Wired Differently” webinar in April, which was more focused on “acting in” disorders.

Behaviors that tend to be common to students who are “wired differently” – and often frustrate or derail educators – include:

  •  Refusal to cooperateIntentional disruption
  • Manipulation and splitting of staff
  • Controlling attention needs
  • Disruptive outbursts
  • Conflicts with Peers
  • Over- and under-reacting to adults and peers

Because these symptoms tend to span several disorders,  this webinar will help attendees understand best practices for working with all these students – particularly in helping to prevent the stress cycle, while strengthening the student’s ability to “own” and manage his/her temperament.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • Common misunderstandings educators sometimes have about these students.
  • Why traditional policies and practices often fail.
  • Do’s and don’ts for teaching and supporting these students with dignity and respect:
    • ”Covert management” of defiant and resistant students
    • Effective and manageable attention
    • De-escalation of crisis events
    • Creating a climate that strikes a balance between challenge and support
    • Helping smooth social interactions and peer relationships
  • Reducing stigma and creating a respectful climate with a particularly “challenging” classroom situation.
  • Practical ways to prevent students from riding the “mental health escalator.”
  • Other successful approaches to reach students with emotional, mental and behavioral challenges.

The goal of this webinar is to provide you with key insights and approaches to help prevent disruptions and distractions, while maximizing the abilities of students with unique needs.

This webinar is recommended for:
